If you have never gone without food, this problem may seem far away. You may not realize that there are struggling children and families in your own community. There may be children in your child’s school who only receive a single decent meal a day—a free or discounted school lunch. These kids may be your child’s friends or the children of a neighbour. The fact is, it happens in nearly every community.
Jonathan Lawler, a successful farmer from Indiana, didn’t realize how widespread the problem of hunger was in his own community until his young son pointed it out to him; his son told him about children in his class who were taking food home from school, from the food pantry.
It didn’t make sense that in a farming community that produces food, his own friends and neighbours were going hungry. So, he made a decision to restructure his business to a non-profit to help feed needy families in his hometown and beyond.
